Suffolk County House of Correction (first) is built.

It is located at today’s Court Square. The first prison in Boston, it is built to confine those who might be “debauched and live idly.” It is replaced by new buildings (second and third) on Court Street in 1721* and 1767,* a new building on East First Street (fourth) in 1823.* It moves to a new building on Leverett Street (fifth) in 1822,* to Charles Street (sixth) in 1851,* to Deer Island (seventh) in 1896,* and to its current site (eighth) in South Bay in 1991.*
